Conceived by the architect Paulo David, the Mudas.Museum of Contemporary Art, it is a modern building awarded internationally for its architecture and perfect integration in the landscape, it is the stage of several exhibitions, musical shows, plays and conferences. The Mudas.Museu de Arte Contemporânea is located on a hill overlooking the village of Calheta, on the west side of the island of Madeira, just over 30 minutes away from the city of Funchal. The museological and artistic collection of this space was transferred from Fortaleza de S. Tiago, in Funchal in a total of 400 pieces, from the 1960s to the present. In this nucleus composed of works by several renowned national plastic artists, several Portuguese plastic artists are represented in its estate, including some born in Madeira Island: Lourdes Castro, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Fernando Calhau, António Palolo, Rui Sanches, João Queiroz, Michael Biberstein, Patrícia Garrido, Martha Telles, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Ana Vidigal, Gäetan, Eduardo Batarda, Daniel Blaufuks, Bárbara Assis Pacheco, Miguel Branco, Pedro Calapez, Pedro Casqueiro, Rui Chafes, Pedro Portugal, José Pedro Croft, Ilda David, Jorge Molder, José Loureiro, Álvaro Lapa, Ana Hatherly, João Vilhena, among many others. This infrastructure has a covered construction area of 12,000 m², having been built as an extension of the existing "Casa da Cultura da Calheta", where the "Galeria" space is currently located. The Mudas.Museu de Arte Contemporânea was conceived in order to create a sober and pleasant environment, providing perspectives of vision from the inside over the sea and the surrounding slopes, and breathtaking landscapes. The building also includes an auditorium, library, shop, cafeteria, restaurant, a large area of cultural entertainment for ateliers and artistic workshops, and a car park with a capacity for 92 spaces. This cultural site has the mission of raising public awareness of the arts in general and, particularly, of contemporary art, promoting lifelong learning and education through art.
