Historical treasure '' Quinta das Cruzes''

Updated: Dec 11, 2020

The volunteers from ARTE.M cultural and artistic association had the pleasure of visiting this museum and enjoy the company of Andreia Morgado, who tirelessly explained the history of this place, Funchal and Madeira. I could not admire more how much she loves her job and the historical richness within it. This museum offers you more than two hours of discovering beautiful works of art, Portuguese and foreign-made furniture, gold and silver objects, as well as jewellery, ceramic pieces and sculptures.

The Quinta das Cruzes manor estate is closely tied to the city’s history as it was the second residence of the family of the first appointed captains of the Island, João Gonçalves Zarco.

It includes the former residence of the Morgados das Cruzes family, the Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy, a garden that includes an orchidarium and an archaeological park containing architectonic objects from demolitions of various buildings in the city.

It has been open to the public since 1953.

The collections cover a wide variety of the decorative arts dating from the 15th century to the first half of the 20th century. They are organised into various nuclei, including paintings, objects crafted in precious metals, furniture, jewellery, sculpture, drawings and engravings, among others.

Tuesday through Sunday: 10.00-12.30 and 14.00-17.30 Mondays and public holidays: Closed

Adress: Calçada de Santa Clara, nº7
